Psychiatrist Explains Why Funny People Have Higher Intelligence

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ever had that whimsical friend or relative who is always quick to come up with a joke? We asked a psychiatrist why funny people and having higher intelligence goes hand-in-hand.
Smart Mind Center psychiatrist from the Gading Pluit Hospital, dr. Andreas Kurniawan SpKJ explained that these types of people are able to construct a joke using the situation they are in and using observational skills to make use of their surroundings as material.
This ability arguably needs a quick-thinking brain to execute. "Their brains are always thinking hard in observing their surroundings. It's easier for them to think out of the box when the brain is driven in such a way," said Andreas in the humor therapy event held at the national library on February 19.
Andreas argues that funny people most certainly know when to deliver a joke or not that goes through an analytical process towards the person they are engaging with or the situation they are experiencing.
"This is called emotional intelligence. Take an example of those who don't make jokes when faced with a 'killer' college lecturer or are grieving," he said.
The psychiatrist also said that these funny people have great reading and speaking abilities as those are needed to deliver a joke or accentuate the humor in a joke. "This is why their intelligence is considered to be above average."
